Assam Travel Guide: Kaziranga, Tea and the Brahmaputra

Assam is the gateway to the North East and one of its most rewarding destinations in its own right, built around the mighty Brahmaputra, its rhinos, and its emerald tea.

Wildlife in Kaziranga

Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinos, plus tigers and wild elephants. Morning jeep safaris are the highlight.

Tea, temples and the river

Stay in a heritage tea bungalow, visit the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, and take a sunset cruise on the Brahmaputra. The river island of Majuli adds a slow, cultural dimension.

Getting around

Guwahati is the region's main air and rail hub, making Assam the natural starting point for almost every North East tour.

  • Kaziranga open ~Nov–April
  • No special permit for Indians
  • Combine with Meghalaya & Arunachal
  • Allow time for a tea-estate stay

TripTrix operates Assam daily from our Guwahati base — agents can request net rates for any circuit.
