Bhutan Travel Guide: Paro, Thimphu and Punakha

Bhutan, the last Himalayan kingdom, offers a rare blend of pristine landscape, living Buddhist culture and a national philosophy built around Gross National Happiness.

The classic circuit

Most tours cover Paro, the capital Thimphu, and Punakha with its magnificent riverside dzong. The prayer-flag ridge at Dochula Pass links them with Himalayan views.

The Tiger's Nest

The hike to Taktsang — the Tiger's Nest monastery, clinging to a cliff 900 m above the Paro valley — is the country's iconic experience, a 4–6 hour round trip.

Practicalities

Travel involves the Sustainable Development Fee, a licensed guide and approved hotels — all handled by a DMC. Entry is by air to Paro or overland via Phuentsholing.

  • SDF, permits & guide arranged for you
  • Best: spring (Mar–May) & autumn (Sep–Nov)
  • Combine with Sikkim, Darjeeling or Assam
  • Moderate fitness needed for the Tiger's Nest

As a DMC, TripTrix handles every Bhutan requirement — agents can request clean net rates.
