North East India is not one climate but many, so a single 'best time' rarely applies to a multi-state trip.
The golden window: October–April
For most travellers the dry season is ideal — clear skies, open safaris and reliable roads across almost the whole region.
Festival and bloom seasons
December brings the Hornbill Festival; spring brings rhododendrons to Sikkim and Arunachal; September/October brings the Ziro festival.
The monsoon
June–September is dramatic and green, best for Meghalaya's waterfalls but challenging for high-altitude and wildlife travel.
- All-round best: Oct–April
- Blooms: March–May
- Waterfalls: Jun–Sep (Meghalaya)
- Festivals: Sep/Oct & December
