North Sikkim holds the state's most jaw-dropping scenery, but also its greatest logistical demands — high altitude, permits and long mountain drives that reward careful planning.
Lachung & Yumthang Valley
The alpine village of Lachung is the base for the Yumthang Valley, the 'Valley of Flowers', which erupts with rhododendrons from March to May. Higher up lies the moonscape of Zero Point.
Lachen & Gurudongmar
From Lachen, an early pre-dawn drive climbs above 5,000 metres to Gurudongmar Lake, sacred and staggeringly beautiful. Acclimatisation and an early start are non-negotiable.
Planning tips
North Sikkim needs protected-area permits and registered vehicles. Build a night's acclimatisation in Gangtok and keep the itinerary flexible for weather and road conditions.
- 6–8 nights recommended for the full north
