Perched above 10,000 feet, Tawang is the spiritual and scenic climax of any Arunachal tour — a Himalayan stronghold of Tibetan Buddhism surrounded by snow peaks.
Tawang Monastery
Founded in the 17th century, Tawang Monastery is the largest in India and second-largest in the world, home to monks, a towering Buddha and centuries of manuscripts.
The journey up
The drive is the adventure: Nuranang Falls, the frozen expanse of Sela Pass, and the option of Bumla Pass and the sacred Madhuri (Sangetsar) Lake on a special permit.
Practical notes
Expect real altitude, cold nights and the possibility of snow closing Sela Pass in deep winter. An acclimatisation night at Dirang is strongly advised.
- ILP required; Bumla needs a separate day-permit
- Best: March–October
- Overnight at Dirang for acclimatisation
- Pack serious warm layers
We handle Tawang permits and high-altitude logistics — request net rates and a safe, day-wise plan.
