Tawang vs Bomdila: Where to Go in West Arunachal (2026)

On the classic West Arunachal route from Guwahati, Bomdila and Tawang are the two big stops. Here's how they compare — though on most itineraries you'll pass through both.

Bomdila in brief

A calm town at a comfortable altitude with a large monastery, apple orchards and sweeping Himalayan views. It's the natural acclimatisation halt on the way up to Tawang.

Tawang in brief

The star of Arunachal — India's largest monastery, the dramatic Sela Pass (about 13,700 ft), Madhuri Lake and deep Indo-Tibetan Buddhist culture near the border. Higher, colder and more spectacular.

Which should you choose?

If you only have time for one, Tawang is the headline experience — but the drive up requires the Bomdila–Dirang stops for altitude and scenery. Ideally, include both across a 6–8 night Arunachal loop.

  • Bomdila: gentle altitude, monastery, acclimatisation
  • Tawang: biggest monastery, Sela Pass, snow
  • Requires an ILP (we process it)
  • Best done together over 6–8 nights

TripTrix runs the Guwahati–Bomdila–Tawang circuit with permits handled — net rates on request.
