Ziro Valley Travel Guide: Apatani Culture & the Music Festival

The Ziro Valley in Arunachal Pradesh is a UNESCO-tentative landscape of pine ridges and emerald paddy fields, home to the remarkable Apatani tribe.

Apatani culture

The Apatani are famous for their ingenious paddy-cum-fish cultivation and, historically, for the facial tattoos and nose plugs of elder women. Village walks through Hong and Hija reveal a deeply sustainable way of life.

The Ziro Festival of Music

Each September or October, the four-day Ziro Festival of Music fills the fields with independent artists and travellers — one of India's most loved outdoor festivals.

Planning

An Inner Line Permit is required and the drive in is long but scenic. Festival-time accommodation is limited and should be booked early.

  • ILP required (we arrange it)
  • Festival: Sep/Oct — book early
  • Stay in Apatani homestays
  • Comfortable weather Oct–April

Ask us to build a Ziro cultural tour or festival package at net rates.
