North East India is not one climate but many. From the rain-soaked cliffs of Meghalaya to the high passes of Arunachal, the 'best time' depends entirely on where you're headed and what you want to see. Here's how we think about timing at TripTrix.
October to April — the golden window
For most travellers, the dry season from October to April is ideal. Skies are clear, roads are reliable, Kaziranga's safaris are open, and the great Himalayan peaks — Kanchenjunga from Sikkim and Darjeeling — reveal themselves at their sharpest.
December — festival season in Nagaland
The first ten days of December belong to the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland, when all 16 major tribes gather at Kisama. If Naga culture is on your list, plan your entire trip around it and book far ahead.
March to May — blooms and waterfalls
Spring brings rhododendrons to Sikkim's Yumthang Valley and the first monsoon showers that swell Meghalaya's waterfalls. It's a beautiful, quieter shoulder season.
June to September — the dramatic monsoon
The monsoon transforms the region into an emerald world of thundering falls — spectacular in Cherrapunji — but Kaziranga closes and mountain roads can be disrupted. Best for photographers who love moody weather.
